Wig Party
Installation, photography, performance, and social practice
Wig Party began as a housewarming celebration and evolved into an exploration of identity, performance, and collective participation. To attend the party, guests were required to wear a wig, transforming a simple social gathering into a temporary space where appearance, character, and self-presentation could be reimagined.
In preparation for the event, I photographed each of my nine roommates in their wigs, embodying fictional personas we developed together. These portraits functioned as both promotional material and installation elements for the party. The portraits appeared throughout the apartment as large-scale prints that blurred the boundaries between documentation, decoration, and performance. The images established a cast of characters before guests even arrived, setting the stage for a shared act of transformation.
The installation extended throughout the apartment and incorporated playful, site-specific interventions, including Pin the Wig on Diana; a sculptural "Kitchen Wig" constructed from 440 strands of yarn; and improvised wig-themed drawings made from lipstick and collected hair in the bathroom. Together, these works transformed familiar domestic spaces into environments of humor, spectacle, and collective authorship.
By using the wig as both object and prompt, Wig Party invited participants to experiment with alternative versions of themselves while simultaneously becoming part of the artwork. The project considers how costumes, social rituals, and shared imagination can create temporary communities, turning a private home into a space for performance, collaboration, and playful self-invention.
